The Skills Service

The Skills Service

Our mission:

Delivered by Opportunity Peterborough and now funded by the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership (LEP), The Skills Service provides a brokerage service to allow effective partnership working between schools, training providers and businesses.

Our Vision:

  • For businesses to fill skills gaps with aspirational and talented young people from their local area through employer engagements that we facilitate.

  • For young people to feel informed and inspired about the wide range of businesses, sectors and opportunities available to them by engaging in our events.

  • For local training providers to focus on the relevant skills to support the local economy using data gathered during our business interactions.

Our History:

Peterborough Skills Service

Peterborough Skills Service (PSS) was launched in 2011 by Opportunity Peterborough as part of its wider Skills Vision for the City. The Vision set out to help new talent prosper, giving voice to the City’s businesses, education providers and funders of education to find out what shape they want the City’s skills agenda to take. A concern voiced regularly by business through Opportunity Peterborough’s annual skills survey is the work-readiness of young people coming out of education at all levels and the appropriateness of their skill sets.

Fenland Enterprise in Education

The Fenland Enterprise in Education (FEE) Project was also set up in 2011 to build closer links between schools and colleges and business. During the 3 year project, it provided a range of opportunities and activities aimed at helping students to get a rounded view of the business world and employers to identify new talent.

Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership (LEP)

The LEP’s Skills Strategy highlighted the importance of an appropriately skilled workforce to support the growing local economy and the need to create a service to bring this vision to reality. Building upon previous best practice of the success of the Peterborough Skills Service (PSS) and the Fenland Enterprise in Education (FEE) Project, the LEP granted funding to expand and develop both services to meet the needs of the wider business community.

The role of ‘The Skills Service’ is to provide a co-ordinated approach between businesses, education and training providers in Peterborough, Fenland, Rutland, King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. The team at Opportunity Peterborough was expanded and is now busy working with businesses and education and training providers across the new area to encourage effective partnership working.
