Psychology Children's Service (Peterborough)

The children's Psychology service

The children's Psychology service in Peterborough is a community-based service within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT). We work as part of a multi-professional team which assesses a child's abilities (up to the age of 5) across a range of areas to determine how best their additional needs can be described and supported.

How this service can help you

The Children's Psychology Service works closely with the specialist speech and language therapist because both professions are interested in how a child communicates, interacts and plays. The psychologist may look at a child's cognitive (thinking) skills and their ability to adapt to social situations and also talk to parents/carers about how the child reacts at home and in other settings.

After a multi-professional assessment, the psychologist and the Specialist Practitioner may be involved in supporting the child's communication, behaviour and learning in conjunction with other professionals.

Psychology is the study of people: how they think and act, and how they react and interact with other people. A child psychologist is particularly interested in applying psychology to help children and young people.
