Heltwate School is a co-educational special school for children and young people aged 5 to 19 years with Moderate to Severe learning Difficulties, Autistic Spectrum Condition and many additional medical needs.
The school roll has increased over the last few years and currently we have almost 170 pupils, all with an Education, Health and Care Plans (EHC) or Statement of Special Education Need.
Admission to Heltwate School takes place after a full multi professional assessment of the child. Parent involvement in the process is imperative and we encourage visits to the school.
Places are allocated through the Authority's Statutory Assessment Team and are for children Education, Health and Care Plans. If your child has a statement you will find it helpful to discuss the position with the Assessment & Review Officer (Tel: 01733 748361, 748364 or 748365) before making your application.
Post 16 Entry requirements
We have a small post 16 provision with places for 16 pupils across 3 KS5 year groups. Transition to Post 16 can be a daunting process and we want you to have a clear and informed idea of what our curriculum entails in preparing your child for adulthood, ensure you make an appropriate choice, and enhance your ability to support them as parents through to adulthood.

SEND
- Description
Each class teacher at Heltwate School takes the SENCo role for their individual class. The Assistant Head Teachers for Upper and Lower School support class teachers with this. All members of the Senior Leadership Team have day to day responsibility and the Assistant Head Teacher Leadership Support takes the role of EHCP coordinator. The Head Teacher usually reports to the governing body and SLT in determining the strategic development of SEND policy and provision in the school.
The Head Teacher, Deputy and Assistant Heads provide professional guidance to colleagues and work closely with staff, parents and carers, and other agencies. The Head Teacher is aware of the provision in the Local Offer. The Senior Team work with staff to ensure the coordination of professionals in turn providing a support role to the family to ensure that pupils with SEND receive appropriate support and high quality teaching.
We have specific duties to prepare young people for the transition to adulthood, as set out in the SEND Code of Practice. The review in Year 9 builds on previous reviews and exiting plans. to allow time for commissioning any necessry provision and support.
