Heltwate School

Helwate Special School

We are mixed special day school offering education for 4 - 16 year old pupils with either moderate or severe learning difficulties. We also have provision for 16 children (Key Stage 1 - Key Stage 4) who have a diagnosis of Autism.

We strive to provide a happy, stimulating, supportive, secure and positive environment which is high in expectation and creates a strong feeling of community.

We aim to provide a broad and balanced education based on the National Curriculum.
Heltwate works continuously to improve the teaching and learning of every pupil within a community environment through an ever increasing standard in its facilities, equipment and resources.

Places are allocated through the Authority's Statutory Assessment Team and are for children with a statement of Educational Needs. If your child has a statement you will find it helpful to discuss the position with the Assessment & Review Officer (Tel: 01733 748361, 748364 or 748365) before making your application.

Local Offer

Each class teacher at Heltwate School takes the SENCo role for their individual class. The Assistant Head Teachers for Upper and Lower School support class teachers with this. All members of the Senior Leadership Team have day to day responsibility and the Assistant Head Teacher Leadership Support takes the role of EHCP coordinator. The Head Teacher usually reports to the governing body and SLT in determining the strategic development of SEND policy and provision in the school.

The Head Teacher, Deputy and Assistant Heads provide professional guidance to colleagues and work closely with staff, parents and carers, and other agencies. The Head Teacher is aware of the provision in the Local Offer. The Senior Team work with staff to ensure the coordination of professionals in turn providing a support role to the family to ensure that pupils with SEND receive appropriate support and high quality teaching.

We have specific duties to prepare young people for the transition to adulthood, as set out in the SEND Code of Practice. The review in Year 9 builds on previous reviews and exiting plans. to allow time for commissioning any necessry provision and support.

Please see our policy for detailed information.
