Home-Start helps families with young children deal with whatever life throws at them.
We support parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children.
Home-Start supports many families who are facing difficult life circumstances; anything from coping with drug or alcohol dependency, fleeing domestic violence or dealing with social care involvement in the family.
Many families have to cope with several issues at the same time.
Having a Home-Start volunteer stops them from reaching crisis point.
The benefits of our support include improved health and well being and better family relationships.
Home-Start's informal and friendly support for families with young children provides a lifeline to thousands of parents and children in over 300 communities across the UK and with forces families in Germany and Cyprus.
Home-Start supports any family where there is at least one child under the age of five. Our support is free, confidential and non judgemental.
We support many types of families:
- Lone parents
- Married or unmarried couples
- Grandparents caring for grandchildren
- Step parents
- Adoptive parents
- Foster parents
- Families where a parent is in the armed forces
- Families where a parent is in prison
- Families where social care or other agencies are involved
- In any location, or for any gender, ethnicity or asylum/immigration status
We provide one-to-one support for parents
Our volunteers visit the family’s home for a couple of hours every week.
They tailor-make their support to the needs of the parents and children.
Volunteers are very committed and will keep visiting until the youngest child turns five or starts school, or until the parents feel they can stand on their own two feet.
Parents and volunteers often develop a deeply trusting relationship which can lead to powerful change within the family.
