St Paul's Church

St Paul's Church

-

St Paul's Church was built nearly 150yrs ago in New England, on the Triangle and is still here providing a place of safety to explore spirituality within the Christian faith. Built to provide a place of worship for railway workers who had come to live in this part of Peterborough, working on the Great Northern Railway close by. Initially known as The Railwayman's Church. None of our current church members have worked on the railway but there are several who enjoy railways especially the steam trains, including the Vicar!

New England is still a busy place, but not with the railway although we can still hear the trains as they head into Peterborough Station or leave it. Now it is full of food shops, of restaurants and take-away's, of hair salons, one pub (used to be about 6!), it has 2 Day Nurseries, one called Zig Zag uses St Paul's Church Hall and is in partnership with St Paul's. It is  a diverse community with many nationalities living and working here. There is a Polish food shop and a Polish eating cafe; a Lithuanian restaurant and take-away which is very popular; Chinese and Indian restaurants and take-aways; Pizza shop; other businesses including Printing; a Recruitment Agency; a Salvation Army Charity shop, Taxi company.  The Fulbridge Academy school has over 800 children go to it and many languages are spoken.

St Paul's has a 10.30am Eucharist service every Sunday and a Weds 10.30am said Eucharist each week.  It has a family type service once a month on a Sunday at 4pm called 'T@4' which is very relaxed and ideal to bring children too. At 5pm there is time to have food together in church. Also monthly a drop-in called OASIS is held from 2-4pm and all welcome for a sit down in a place of safety, have a chat over a cuppa.  Once a month all men are welcome to The Shed time from 10-12noon on a Saturday, including having a bacon roll and tea or coffee. This is usually held in church.

Rev Ron Watkinson is available as the parish priest to conduct weddings in the church; christenings and baptisms too.  If there is a bereavement then let the funeral directors know that you would like the Vicar of St Paul's to conduct the funeral, either at the Crematorium or in the Church.  Times of difficulties such as illness or death can be very challenging and often it is good to offload how you are feeling to someone outside the family. The Christian church can offer a listening ear - all you need to do is to contact them - at St Paul's it is Rev Ron or his wife, Val, who is a Licensed Pastoral Minister. See contact details or look up their website on www.stpauls-peterborough.org.uk
